Guild Wars Free forever?
Guild Wars Free forever?
I was thinking to myself, how can GW stay free for the long term. As it gets more and more popular will they cave in and decide to charge people a subscription fee? It just seems to me they are going to either get greedy or at some point outgrow their "free" business plan. Those servers cost money! |

Did you even bother to... I dunno, read into the game... at all? I don't want to be a jerk, but this question has been answered thousands of times in so many places for as long as the game has been announced

Since you are new here, I am going to answer, but the search function works wonders sometimes. Anyway, it has been A-Net's postion, and the plan they have modeled to never charge a monthly fee of any kind. Now I realize that never is a long time, and we can all specualte that they may or may not change their plan, but I believe it is their intent to only charge for each new chapter that comes out.

well. the initial price of the game covers several months (per player) of most other games monthly prices. so they secure their money for some time into the future.
however guildwars cannot continue to be like that. eventually they will run out of new things to release. there will be longer between the chapters. and they will start loosing on it. but i think at this point they have made quite a bit of money. because i do beileve a lot of people think like me. i do not want to pay for a month of playtime, i prefer buying a game and play it until time ends (theoretically) P2P games often cause people to become addicted to it. because you can't afford to not play. if you have allready payed for the game. it doesn't really matter if you play it or not. you still own it. atleast thats how i feel. I would have loved to play Lineage 2, WoW, and any other MMORPG you could mention. but the time i have for gaming is very limited due to achool. and i somply don't have the money to pay for a few hours of game-time each week. with GW i can play when i have the time without loosing anything when i don't play as much |

I think this is A-net pricing plan for Guild Wars.
The game itself ($49.99), The expansion or chapter 2 ($49.99 or cheaper.. *random guessing*) The online update is free. But in the future, A-net might change the plan and charge money (small amount.. i hope) for different updates or expansion? But that in my opinion what their pricing plan might look like. just joking, typo's can be fun. I think that A.Net will do there best to keep GW away from monthly subscriptions. They have a team dedicated to new content and plan bi-annual updates that you pay for. If those are large content updates, then $30, twice = $60 or $5.00 per month. If they are smaller content updates and cost $20 each, then $20 twice a year is $40 = $3 and change per month. Even though they are biannual purchased updates, it is as if there is a monthly fee. The kudos here is that you never have to purchase the updates and can still continue to play the game, you just never keep up with everyone else, which I assume, A.Net as a business is counting on. |

GW will stay free as long as ANET and NCSoft are in business together. If they start charging players fees, it will be on their next new game and it wouldn't be called Guild Wars.

ArenaNet asking for a monthly fee is equatable to them saying, "Hi! We'd like to kill the Guild Wars franchise. Please, run away to better alternatives and thanks for playing!"
This is why is won't happen. Ever. -- Scaper-X |

They get lots of their players from this "no fee" stuff. Like scaper x said, they charge, they loose everyone. Also though, they charge, they might be able to amke it better, lots higher levels than 50 etc.
